About Lumen

In one line

Lumen brings cinematic, open-licensed 4K footage to the Mac desktop, with motion controls that pause while you work.

Short description

Lumen is a live wallpaper app for the Mac. It turns the desktop into genuine 4K footage, from Hubble and Webb deep-space imagery to cities after dark, in a single click. It freezes automatically when windows cover the desktop, eases off on battery, and runs entirely on the Mac, with no account and no tracking.

Long description

Lumen is a native macOS app that replaces a still desktop picture with moving 4K video. Its library holds 181 clips across 14 collections, every one checked to be true 3840 by 2160, drawn from ESA/Hubble, ESA/Webb, Mixkit and Pixabay under open licences and credited inside the app. Users can also turn their own videos into wallpapers.

Lumen is designed to stay out of the way. Three motion modes let people decide how much movement they want, Auto mode freezes the wallpaper whenever their work covers the desktop, and a still-frame picker means even a paused wallpaper looks deliberate. There is no account, no analytics and no server. Lumen is designed and built in Pune, India, and published by Backstreet Ventures Private Limited.
